I’m just an average person getting my butt in gear… over 40, desk job, no athletic background, loving wife who feeds our family well. It’s a classic recipe for a long-term health disaster.
In late 2006 I discovered recumbent trikes… and fell in love with them. Through 2007 I determined that I wanted to ride 50 miles (80km) in an organized cycling event before winter came. I slowly built up successes over the summer, and succeeded in the October Moab Century Tour which is held annually in gorgeous Moab, Utah. The side benefit was that over the course of the warm months, my weight improved by more than twenty pounds (10kg). However, the 50-mile ride took a psychological toll on me, and I used the cold weather as an excuse to put the trike up for the winter.
After discovering my atrocious cholesterol levels in March of 2008, I decided to truly re-engineer mind, body, and soul when it comes to fitness. I’m grateful for the instruction and support that I’ve received through my friendship with the founders of Creation Tree Coaching. This association has eased some of the burden from my shoulders by equipping me with the tools to understand how the mind works, and the abundant nature of the world. This, combined with past experiences with tragic health problems, has laid a foundation from which I succeed.
My intent is to share my experiences twice a week so that others might also benefit from this journey.

Getting There (candid photo at martial arts practice)
2008-07-29 Update:
Here’s a bad cell phone picture taken of me at martial arts practice, over 50 pounds lighter. There’s a big difference compared to the butterball on the trike (above)!

Thanks, tcugirl12! LOL… “Butterballhood” that’s a funny way to put it. You’re welcome to come over to “fithood”. The water is looking better all the time.

Thanks for visiting my blog “Run the Cat.” Your blog is very inspirational. I’m glad you got to participate in the Moab Century Tour. We have a condo in Moab and love to visit there as often as we can. It is beautiful there.
Great blog! And very motivating. I’m four days in on a similar mission, I went to get back kayaking and playing football but have just got too unfit to do them. Good luck in keeping it up!

@Jewel:
Take it one step at a time! I’ve been using the moniker “Joe Average” because when it comes to this… I’m truly nobody special.
23kg is a lot. But how about 3? You can do that. Then do it seven more times in a row.
Your story is great! Good for you for what you’ve accomplished and for your willingness to share the story and inspire others!
